THE HEART OF ISLAND ATHLETICS
The athletes lens
Based on O’ahu, Hawai’i, PROMA is dedicated to documenting the heart of athletics in the islands—from youth to D1 college athletes—and the culture, family, and communities who shape the game. Our mission is to produce authentic, emotionally resonant pieces that highlight the passion, heritage, and deeper purpose driving these artists on and off the field. We aim to empower both emerging and established talent through candid storytelling, celebrating the journey as much as the achievement.

‘AUMĀKUA PōPEKU
This youth flag football team isn’t just playing for touchdowns, they’re preserving a language and a legacy. Every practice, every huddle, and every play integrates ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, making this club one of the few sports teams in the state using Hawaiian as their primary language. More than a team, they are a movement, proving that culture and competition can thrive side by side. PROMA had the honor of speaking with their coaches and athletes, capturing how football is helping empower the next generation of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi speakers through discipline, teamwork, and pride.
“[Hawaiian] is not dead. We’re not done.”
